Diamond Planet Found Orbiting a Pulsar [PHOTOS & VIDEOS]

Well, the researchers weren't certain what the planet would look like up close, but they think the forces upon the planet, which is believed to be the universe's largest diamond - a shocking 10 , that's 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,... The pulsar that the planet orbits is 4,000 light years away. "It's highly speculative, but if you shine a light on it, I can't see any reason why it wouldn't sparkle like a diamond," Travis Metcalfe of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. Pulsars are tiny stars the sporadically give off a burst of radio waves. They are formed when the core of a large star is compressed during a supernova and collapses into a neutron star. The research is published in Thursday's issue It then gives off radiation during a fixed period.

Lifetime and Death of a Star A star burns hydrogen, converting it into helium, during its lifetime, known as the main sequence of the star. Now, depending on the mass of the star, there might be many such contraction-fusion phases, making higher and higher elements. 4 times that of the Sun becomes a neutron star, basically an extremely compact object made up of neutrons. Above 3 solar masses, you get a black hole. The difference with other white dwarfs in the Universe is that this was orbiting a neutron star. Once the helium is also snuffed out, the star contracts again. Astrophysicists think that the planet is actually the core of a star, which died and became a white dwarf. A mass the size of the Sun will stop somewhere at oxygen and then just settle down, cooling off and becoming a white dwarf....
